Imagery as a Relational Organizer in Associative Learning 1

چکیده
Mental imagery improves paired-associate (PA) learning relative to overt rehearsal. The effect might be due to increased reliability of stimulus encoding or to increased relational association produced by imagery. These hypotheses expect different outcomes when imagery and rote-rehearsal Ss are compared on memory tests of stimulus recognition and on recall of the response term conditional upon stimulus recognition. The Ss learned PAs using one of three methods--rote repetition, interactive imagery, or separation imagery. Associative recall was highest for interactive-imagery Ss and lower and equal for roteand separationimagery Ss. No differences in stimulus recognition appeared. Such evidence supports the relational-organizing interpretation of the PA effect of imagery in opposition to the stimulus-distinctiveness or reliable-encoding explanations.

Using graphic organizers to attain relational knowledge from expository text.
Many students with learning disabilities (LD) experience difficulties with extracting relationships from expository text, especially if they are implicit. Results from studies with K-12 participants have been inconclusive regarding the potency of the graphic organizer (GO) as a comprehension tool. This study attempted to address some of the concerns with GO research by examining the effects of ...
متن کاملConditional discrimination in young children: the roles of associative and relational processing.
Two experiments examined conditional discrimination in 4- to 6-year-olds. Children learned to choose one of two objects (e.g., circle) when the background was, say, red and to choose the other object (e.g., triangle) when the background was, say, blue. Awareness was assessed and interpreted as a marker of relational processing. In Experiment 1, most 4- and 5-year-olds did not reach the learning...
متن کاملA rat in the sewer: How mental imagery interacts with object recognition
The role of mental imagery has been puzzling researchers for more than two millennia. Both positive and negative effects of mental imagery on information processing have been discussed. The aim of this work was to examine how mental imagery affects object recognition and associative learning. Based on different perceptual and cognitive accounts we tested our imagery-induced interaction hypothes...
متن کاملA propositional perspective on context effects in human associative learning.
Propositional models of associative learning postulate that the behavioral impact of regularities in the presence of two events is mediated by the formation of propositions about the relation between these events. Because the mere statistical contingency between events often does not provide enough information to infer the nature of the relation between those events (e.g., whether one event is ...
متن کاملA Biologically Inspired Method for Conceptual Imitation Using Reinforcement Learning
Levels Observations are categorized to concepts with respect to some principles that depend on physical and=or functional characteristics of the items. From this perspective, Zentall et al. have categorized concepts to three levels of abstraction (Zentall et al. 2002) (see Figure 1): Perceptual: These concepts are formed solely by measuring similarity of instances in perceptual space. Such data...
